SONO Switch Tower Museum

The SONO Switch Tower Museum tells the great history of the railroad switch tower.

Towers were used by railroads to control areas of track, preventing trains from crashing. They also housed the mechanism for changing trains from one track to another. A tower operator would operate this mechanism by throwing levers that were connected to the tracks, thus changing the direction of the track.

Stepping Stones Museum for Children

Stepping Stones Museum for Children, named one of America’s Top 50 Children’s Museums, features interactive exhibits, educational programs and fun for the whole family. With four main galleries, a toddlers-only gallery and more than 100 hands-on activities, Stepping Stones offers children ages ten and under plenty to explore and discover.

Understanding that children learn best by doing, all exhibits and programs are designed to promote active inquiry and investigation. Children construct race cars and learn about momentum, explore whirlpools and the water cycle, and role play as scientists studying tropical rainforests and conservation.

Stepping Stones offers a variety of educational programs to enhance and extend the visitor experience. These offerings include family programs, school and group programs, after-school programs, scout workshops, early childhood classes, summer drop-off programs, special events and performances. The museum’s whimsical design makes it a great venue for birthday parties and special events.

Norwalk State Heritage Park

Norwalk State Heritage Park is a mixed urban waterfront development project based around the estuary of the Norwalk River, a small yet complex and important ecological system. The Norwalk River flows into Long Island Sound and thus into the Atlantic Ocean. The estuary and its group of islands are an example of the delicate balance between great natural beauty and frequent human use.

The shores of the estuary display the whole panoply of urban uses: industrial, commercial, residential and recreational. Norwalk is famed for its traditional oyster industry and among the largest oyster producing ports in the nation. Local sensitivity to the environment is enhanced by this important commercial activity, which is wholly dependent on the quality of water flowing over the oyster beds at the mouth of the estuary.

As a whole, The Norwalk State Heritage Park links several smaller but distinct attractions:

Mathews Park & Pine Island Cemetery
Oyster Shell Park
The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk
The SoNo Historic District
The Marina District

Also, within these areas a number of Special Attractions can be found:

The Amphitheater
Art Under the Bridge
The Bike Path
Water Activities
